Professional Communications Systems, Inc. Installing High-Tech A/V Presentation Network For Florida Coastal School of Law

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – National integrator of broadcasting and audiovisual technology, Professional Communications Systems, Inc. (PCS) has designed, and is in the process of building, one of the most technologically sophisticated video and audio presentation networks among the nation’s law schools.

The firm was selected by Florida Coastal School of Law (FCSL) over other national and local A/V integration firms because of its deep and varied experience. FCSL’s IT Director, Allen Smith states, “Professional Communications Systems is the vendor of choice for all the school’s audiovisual needs. The partnership with PCS will provide FCSL with cutting edge and superior audio/video technology in classrooms and courtrooms.”

The 220,000 sq. ft., five-story, building on the new campus of in Jacksonville will have presentation media capabilities that rival in size those in much larger education institutions, and is being developed on a highly accelerated construction schedule.

With A/V installation having begun in mid-May, and completion planned before the Fall term begins, the architects, builders, trades, and media integrator must coordinate most closely and meet quite demanding deadlines. The site requires complete retrofitting and remodeling, which will be conducted from the top down. A wide array of photographs of the site’s appealing architectural features, as well as the stripped interior, are online at www.fcsl.edu/pr/newcampus.cfm, along with ongoing construction update information.

Project manager, Joe Gaynor, of the Professional Communications Systems Jacksonville office, which is leading the effort, says of the multifaceted installation, “FCSL has insisted on using top-of-the-line equipment, to ensure that the facility is second to none in presentation capabilities.”

Hundreds of components will be networked in 20 rooms, plus public areas, in the redesigned building layout.

Centerpiece of the complex is a Trial Court Room, which will have a 40” Mitubishi LCD screen overhead to allow students seated farther back a close-up view of proceedings at the swivel-lectern and judge’s bench, as well as the materials being presented digitally. Six 20” flat screen monitors will be provided for jury examination of evidence and lawyer presentations. Judges and lawyers will input content through wireless AMX control panels, enabled by Extron laptop interfaces and Boeckeler annotaters for superimposing commentary or graphics on the video or photographic evidence and other prepared presentation material. JBL speakers will broadcast sound, and three Elmo pan/tilt/zoom cameras will record courtroom activity.

An Appellate Court Room will offer similar technology, without the jury screens. In addition, the design includes six classrooms to accommodate 80-100 students, one with videoconferencing ability; five 40-50-student classrooms (one videoconferencing); four conference rooms; and three seminar rooms seating 20-25.

In all, the complex is thoroughly networked with audiovisual and Internet communications in a range of capabilities from simple to complex, including Panasonic plasma monitors from 50” to 65” in the library, atrium, garage and reception areas on the first floor.

James Wagoner, A/V project engineer for PCS, states, “The FCSL presentation system will be an example of what can be accomplished at the highest levels of education, using high-tech instructional tools.”

FCSL is part of The InfiLaw System, a consortium of independent law schools, and currently has more than 1,000 students and 100 faculty members. The new campus, including a 1,400 space parking garage, will employ these state-of-the-art learning technologies to provide an appealing "student-centered" experience that promotes, facilitates and supports a collaborative learning and teaching environment.

Jacksonville-based Rink Design Partnership Inc. is the architect, and Atlanta-based Skanska Building USA Inc. is the manager of the building’s construction. IDEO, an international design company, is using the signature elements in the overall project design as a template for other InfiLaw schools, to set them above the normal institutional standards.

Professional Communications Systems, Inc. has been a leading provider of consulting, systems integration and equipment solutions to broadcasters and users of audiovisual presentation technology since 1985. Headquartered in Tampa, PCS is a division of Media General, Inc., owner of television, newspaper and Internet media properties throughout the Southeastern United States, and a member of PSNI. The firm recently expanded its facilities in Tampa, and maintains regional offices in Ft. Lauderdale, Jacksonville, Miami, Orlando and Pensacola, Florida, as well as Albany, Georgia.

Professional Communications Systems has received notice for its installations at the Global Technology & Information Center of Nielsen Media Research in Oldsmar, Florida, WMFE-TV in Orlando, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Raymond James Stadium.
